Language and Culture Summer Camp
CI-MSU Language and Culture Summer Camps offer three weeks of Chinese language activities to K-12 students in the greater Lansing area. This non-profit summer camp is for children and teens who are interested in learning Chinese language, practicing Chinese art and handicrafts, experiencing Chinese culture and tradition, and making friends from different cultural backgrounds. No previous exposure to the Chinese language is necessary. Through the camps, students increase their multicultural competence by engaging in interactive, fun, and educational activities provided by professional camp teachers. We offer three weeks of camp at different levels: K-5, 6-8 and 9-12th grade. Students are grouped with each other based upon previous Chinese experience. During the camps, students have the opportunity to engage in diverse activities and use specialized learning materials which are tailored for each level of group.

Camp Teachers
Our summer camp is run in concert with the MSU College of Education. All of our camp teachers are enrolled in the Chinese Teacher Certification Program and take graduate level courses as part of their summer camp work. During their courses at MSU, camp instructors work with professors to learn about best-practice methods to teach Chinese as a foreign language.
This summer, we will have a group of 22 teachers from diverse backgrounds, including, native Chinese individuals, and people who immigrated to the US from China many years ago. All teachers are fluent in both English and Chinese, are experienced in teaching, and passionate in leading the students to have a wonderful cultural experience!
Engaging Camp Activities
K-5 group:
Students learn useful Chinese expressions and Chinese characters; do interesting Chinese handicrafts such as paper cuts and origami (paper folding); learn Chinese songs, dance and games, and get to hear Chinese folklore.
6-8 group & 9-12 group:
Students spend their time learning Chinese language and writing; participating in hands-on art and cultural activities (calligraphy, traditional opera, handicraft…); engaging in traditional sports, discussions over cross-cultural differences and discovering China. Specialists will also be invited to provide students enriched experience in Chinese culture.
Wonderful Experience and Great Feedback
As the only Chinese camp in the Lansing Area, our summer camp gives a unique opportunity for local children to learn another culture and language beyond their national boundaries. It's always amazing to see our camp children who have no experience with Chinese singing Chinese songs and using the Chinese language they learned in the summer camp.

Our efforts have been recognized by students and parents. Parents have expressed the desire to have CI-MSU summer camps become full day and to run longer each summer. Many students asked to come back next year to continue their experience in our summer camps. A mother of a 6-year old camper said with smile: “I can tell that she really enjoys the experience in the summer camp. She was excited to go to the camp everyday and proud that she was learning Chinese. It has been a few months since the summer camp but she is still practicing the language. As a mother, I am happy that my child had this interesting experience and became more aware about the Chinese culture.”
We look forward to camps this coming summer in 2013. We hope to run even better camps this year, and are always looking for ways to improve what we do!
